And so it was last Sunday with Charlestown edging past Castlebar, just when some might have felt a shock was on the cards. In Crossmolina’s case in our semi-final defeat to Knockmore it looked as though we had too much experience and not enough youthful exuberance. Last Sunday Castlebar had plenty of youthful energy around the field, but when the game was there to be won, Charlestown had that little bit of guile and know-how to close out the deal. With all their experience they knew how to win this game and advance to yet another county final.

The first of the major adult county titles will be given out on Saturday when Tooreen host Ballyhaunis in the Mayo Senior Hurling Championship final, with the TJ Tyrell Cup at stake. The men in red and black have been the premier force in Mayo hurling for the last decade, picking up their fifth title in seven years last year with a 0-15 to 2-7 win over their opponents. The last time Tooreen won the county title was back in 2003 and since then they have been on the coat tails of their neighbours.

Kilkenny forward, Henry Shefflin has joined county compatriot DJ Carey and scooped his ninth GAA hurling All-Star this year following the Cat’s four-in-a-row achievement.

The Kilkenny senior hurling team is to be celebrated later tonight (Friday) at a special reception hosted by the President of Ireland, Mary McAleese.

St Kieran’s College recorded a well earned victory over the Kilkenny CBS in the Leinster Schools Junior Hurling ‘A’ final. The game was played infront of a good crowd in Nowlan Park on Monday last.
